Do clitoris-owners and semen retention practitioners in the West experience pseudo-Dhat/Ascetic Syndrome?
Dhat syndrome is a folk illness that commonly described by people in India and parts of Asia. It is characterized by a preoccupation with loss of semen, usually in young penis-owners, while having sex, urinating, passing stools, or having wet dreams. The preoccupation of loss of semen is also associated with vague and multiple somatic and psychological complaints like loss of vitality, fatigue, listlessness, loss of appetite, lack of physical strength, poor concentration, and forgetfulness. Some people with Dhat syndrome have found help in therapies and medications for anxiety and depression.
Like other cultural-bound syndromes or folk illnesses (e.g., koro), there are no objective biochemical or structural alternations that cause Dhat syndrome. By contrast, unlike Dhat syndrome, post-orgasmic illness syndrome is thought to be linked to allergies, hormones, hyperglycemia, or autonomic imbalance with parasympathetic over-reactivity (See reference section from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postorgasmic_illness_syndrome and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-coital_tristesse).
BOTH PENIS-OWNERS AND CLITORIS-OWNERS REPORT DHAT SYNDROME
While Dhat syndrome is mostly associated with penis-owners, (to my surprise) Dhat syndrome is also associated with clitoris-owners: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4279300/
I was not able to find any information on Dhat syndrome and trans people, which appears to be a gap in the literature. In the study on Dhat syndrome in clitoris-owners, two clitoris-owners believed that whitish vaginal discharge was associated with their depressive and somatic symptoms, which include fatigue, listlessness, increased anxiety, loss of appetite, lack of physical strength, poor concentration, and forgetfulness.
DO PEOPLE OF WESTERN NATIONS EXPERIENCE PSEUDO-DHAT SYNDROME?
When I think about the possibility of pseudo-Dhat syndrome in the West, the first group that come to mind are penis-owners on online forums dedicated to semen retention. I do not know of any similar groups of clitoris-owners in the West.
Clitoris-owners in the Nofap community seem to be motivated by self-improvement, quitting pornography, it’s claimed anti-aging/beauty benefits, or religion rather than preventing weakness (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIyvFZ6xiD4 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSKenLJtJnA). Historically however, Western artifacts of a past remain that discourage clitoris-owners from masturbation, stating side effects should a clitoris-owner masturbate: https://www.google.com/books/edition/Counsel_to_Parents/t5h8b8FMF1QC?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=masturbation+self-abuse+vitality&pg=PA203&printsec=frontcover.
I am not aware of any trans people reporting Dhat-like symptoms in any literature or media.
What factors in the Western environment might create the conditions for someone with a penis to experience pseudo-Dhat syndrome?
Individual Factors
- Penis-owners with a preoccupation with sexual performance, potential semen loss, and premature ejaculation.
- Some penis-owners, particularly young, adolescent ones, report bad side effects from ejaculating on online forums.
Factors in Community
- Artifacts of internet culture promote semen retention, such as nofap, semen retention websites and subreddits, and some tantra groups, and manosphere spaces (bodybuilding forums and MGTOW).
- These groups tend to state side effects will happen to them if they ejaculate, especially through masturbation.
- The communities support their beliefs with some of the same sources that people in India and parts of Asia use to research Dhat syndrome. This reinforces their beliefs instead of challenging them.
- They tend to use old sources on ejaculation and orgasm (https://forum.nofap.com/index.php?threads/sigmund-freud-on-masturbation.204627/) in place of or in favor of findings of modern science. See this post for ejaculation and prostate health https://www.reddit.com/r/MultipleOs/comments/102tk7k/ejaculation_frequency_and_prostate_health/
- It is common for semen retention practitioners in the West to rationalize their practice of semen retention using old 19th century medical books: https://www.google.com/books/edition/The_Eclectic_medical_journal_of_Pennsylv/14URY39Vy8wC?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=masturbation+self-abuse+vitality&pg=PA241&printsec=frontcover
- Case reports of Dhat-like syndrome (koro) occurring in a westerner: (https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/the-british-journal-of-psychiatry/article/abs/korolike-symptom-in-a-nonchinese-subject/709E9A89FF4C767FE8DB5CB97A114A62)
Factors in Culture
- Beliefs that sex hurts sports performance
- History of celebrities attributing skills or accomplishments to semen retention (apparently everyone from Shakespeare to Elvis Presley): https://www.reddit.com/r/Semenretention/comments/bfi5d5/did_any_of_these_historical_people_do_semen/?utm_source=BD&utm_medium=Search&utm_name=Bing&utm_content=PSR1
- Religions in the West promote still promote asceticism and sexual purity
Historical Factors
- In the late Middle Ages in Europe, it was believed that men could lose their penises through magical attacks by witches (https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S1743609515316519)
- Anti-masturbation campaigns throughout time (https://stopmasturbationnow.org/ and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Harvey_Kellogg#Masturbation_prevention)
Factors in Government
- Anti-masturbation laws in Western nations (https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/blog/2013/sep/19/masturbation-laws-world-penal-code)
Factors from Other Ecosystems
- Easternization of the West – Spread of eastern practices, culture, and customs into the west
