The science of becoming orgasmic, experiencing orgasms, and having multiple orgasms.

On Blended Orgasms: What are they? What types are there? Will it blend?

Blended orgasms are mysterious. Many questions remain unanswered and under-investigated in scholarly literature. The answers might vary from individual to individual. Unlike simple phenomenon, such a complex phenomenon cannot have a complete definition, only a more or less adequate one. “Blended orgasm” has many definitions.

Here’s my attempt at defining “blended orgasm.” I had difficulty selecting words that included cases of orgasms in phantom limbs, non-genital orgasms, non-positive orgasms, and many other experiences. My definition, like any definition or matrix of definitions, is not all-encompassing:

A peak of sensation experienced in or involving two or more spots or regions.

There are many more questions than answers:

  • What is an orgasm? What parts of the body can experience orgasm? What is a blended orgasm? What parts of the body can experience orgasm together or close together? What is the extent to which orgasms can blend? Why do some blended orgasms have contraction patterns in some people as touted by the Lioness App based on prior physiological descriptions of orgasm (e.g., here and here), while others do not? Is regional orgasm proclivity associated with regional nerve fiber density or the way a region’s nerves signal the brain?
  • Is a blended orgasm two orgasm or more subtypes of orgasms had simultaneously? How are these subtypes classified? Who should determine the classifications? The subject? The physiologist? The endocrinologist? The brain imager? The psychologist? For more info, see the r/multipleos post on the difficulty of defining orgasm from various perspectives.
  • Are blended orgasms received through various forms of stimulation unique? Should it be defined based on the type of stimulation, anatomical locations where one feels the orgasm or orgasms, the region stimulated, or other psychological responses? Is an orgasm from a given type of pain or sensation a different typology (e.g., pain-induced nipple orgasm) or a pleasure induced? Are people who think their way to orgasm have orgasms that are classified differently that those that a stimulated? Can the same location on the body have multiple types of orgasm? Does intensity of a given orgasm or blend of orgasm lend itself to new, orgasm-by-orgasm typologies (e.g., super orgasm or “mind-induced neovaginal-anal-nipple super orgasm” or “simultaneous ass-spanking-induced clitoris-sensed orgasm with simultaneous regional nipple climax or stimulation)?
  • Should blended orgasms be studied on an individual, case-by-case basis through interviews? How might prior research describing the limited typologies (e.g., clitoral orgasm, penis orgasm, anal orgasm, g-spot orgasm, and nipple orgasm) influence the way participants classify or reduce their classifications? Is there any usefulness to describing blended orgasms based on typologies of researchers like Singer and Singer, Beverly Whipple, and Umit Sayin?
  • What are some blended orgasms of individuals in the LGBTQ+ and BDSM community? In how many places can they blend simultaneously? Do blend orgasms occur simultaneously or close together? Is there a connection between blended orgasms and full body orgasms? What tools are available or can be made with mobility conditions be able to stimulate multiple regions of their body? Is the region stimulated where the orgasm occurs, or is the orgasm felt somewhere else? How do people prefer to blend or experience their blended orgasms? To what extent can an orgasm be blended? Through what means (e.g., flogging + clitoral stimulation + anal stimulation) have people reported blended orgasms? Were these orgasms felt in one or multiple areas? How do continuous orgasms, multiple orgasms, status orgasms, and super orgasms relate and not relate to blended orgasms?

Am I thinking too much about this? Sometimes I think so, but then again, the way we think about orgasms and conceptualize them and the kind of questions we ask and research. For example, these questions can influence actions of people related to the orgasm throughout the ecosystem. Perhaps a reader who is doing a Master’s Thesis, Dissertation, or other project can see a question here and be inspired to use it or its derivative question as a research question. Disseminated through time and media from research, the new information, along with numerous other ecosystemic factors, can influence the way people explore their bodies, the extent to which they believe their bodies will respond, the region on thinks to stimulate, and the known options of sex acts and toys selected to stimulate these regions.

WHAT INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE ON BLENDED ORGASMS

Most of the limited research on blended orgasm includes clitoris-owners  (See here for Levin et al.’s discussion history of clitoris-owner orgasm typology. For a model of clitoris-owner blended orgasms, see here

Why is there not much out there one trans people and neovaginas? Trans people have only recently been included and considered in orgasmology research. Although some blogs have listed some typologies of orgasms that trans individuals with a neovagina and penis-owners report having, researchers have been slow to include them. Penis-owners have been excluded based on the idea popularized by Master’s and Johnson’s model that penis-owner orgasm are singular and nonplural, and all cisgender clitoris-owners are multiorgasmic and multi-dimensional. This perpetuated misconceptions that (1) all clitoris-owners are multi-orgasmic despite research showing it is closer to 10% to 15% for extended orgasm response and up to 42.7% for multiple orgasms in some samples, (2) that penis-owners can only have one orgasm and one type of orgasm, and (3) that all people experience orgasmic response similar to their sample.

Despite earlier researchers like Kinsey discussing multiorgasmic penis-owners and similar concepts in ancient tantric resources, many researchers, doctors, educators, and lay people believed and–still believe–that multiple orgasms and multiple orgasm typologies were not possible for these people. Ejaculation and orgasm were viewed as the part of the same phenomenon. Reductionism became the lens through which penis-owner sexuality was viewed, and holism became the lens through which clitoris-owner sexuality was viewed (See here.).

Without knowing much about orgasm in general, it’s hard to describe blended orgasm, assuming words, art, and other mediums can somewhat do that. Prior to acknowledgement of the blend orgasm in the scientific community, notions of blending pain and orgasm were prevalent in texts associated with Marquis de Sade and Chevalier Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. (See also for example of blending pain and pleasure in activities here and here for a historical perspective. Tantra also has some mentions of blended, continuous, or full body orgasms. (See Umit Sayin’s work for more info.).

DESCRIBED TYPOLOGIES THAT MIGHT BLEND

There might be many sub-typologies of each of these and others. These might also feel different for different people. Many can be renamed to be more gender-confirming. Very rarely have I encountered a blog that mentions that there are other possible types of orgasms people might report that are not on this list. Should it even be classified by genitalia? For instance, a blended orgasm consisting of a reported anal orgasm and a nipple orgasm might be experienced by any of these individuals. Here’s some examples:

  • Types that some trans women report having (See here.): The clitoral or penile head orgasm, the vaginal or penile body orgasm, the G-spot or prostate orgasm, the squirting orgasm, the A-spot or seminal vesicle orgasm, the deep spot orgasm, the U-spot or coronal orgasm, the nipple/breast orgasm, inguinal canal orgasm, the mouth orgasm, non-genital orgasms, the skin orgasm, and the mental orgasm, etc.
  • Some Clitoris-owner typologies (See here and here.): Clitoral-orgasm, g-spot orgasm, anal orgasm, cervical orgasm, A-spot orgasm, O-spot orgasm,  p-spot orgasm, u-spot orgasm,full-body orgasm, hands-free orgasm, c-spot orgasm, nipple orgasm, coregasm, skin orgasm, fantasy orgasm, oral orgasm, exercise orgasm, mental orgasm, energy orgasm, breath orgasm, non-genital orgasms, spontaneous orgasm, sleep orgasm, ect.
  • Some Penis-owner typologies: (See here.) Prostate orgasm, penis orgasm, deep anal spot orgasm, perineum orgasm, anal orgasms, ejaculatory orgasm, non-ejaculatory orgasm, nipple orgasm, squirting orgasms, non-genital orgasms, pelvic orgasm, sleep orgasm, breath orgasm, skin orgasm, fantasy orgasm, etc.

Because of the state of science and its poor abilities to detect that an orgasm is occurring, the subject is the current best authority for determining orgasm occurrence. Orgasms can be difficult for subjects to realize sometimes, as described by some people on r/becomingorgasmic. Each individual should be able to classify their orgasms, give them their names, and typology. While this is not good for statistical purposes, it empowers the participants to describe their experience. It can also be gender-affirming to have typological nomenclature that aligns with how a participant identifies. I recommend for researchers to create typology tools that can help subjects describe their orgasm typologies.

Some individuals feel one orgasm of a blended orgasm combination more that the others. Sometimes the region stimulated correlates with where a person feels an orgasm. However, others, like people who enjoy certain flogging styles in particular ways with specific toy types, might experience an orgasm in the genital region even though their back is being hit. This may be part of the extended orgasm response. Others may feel a climax of sensation similar to a penis or clitoral orgasm, in only the back region. Most definitions of orgasm would not consider this an orgasm even though the subject does.

All these questions can be intimidating as they are difficult to more adequately answer and impossible to fully answer. A takeaway message that I received from my thinking about blended orgasms was the potential for me to explore the unexplored in my own body. My hope is that future research will open their minds to include additional, participant-defined typologies for more variety of experiences in the literature. Collectively this can help to dismantle notions of generalized or universal thinking in literature.
