The science of becoming orgasmic, experiencing orgasms, and having multiple orgasms.

Contractile Typologies of Orgasm: Should this correlate be a determiner of typology?

One way orgasm typology is done in the literature is by putting adjectives to contractile patterns. While I believe subjective feeling should determine the typology, typologies that involve contractions can be added to the subjective description: an explosive anal orgasm with type B contractions.

Recently, the Lioness vibrator records contraction data. With this contraction data, a few researchers have described three types of orgasms: the wave, the volcano, and the avalanche contractual patterns. Previous literature examine regular and irregular contraction patterns.

Lila (1992) uses the following adjectives to describe the types in the literature: “plateau,” “tonic,” “clonic,” and “fusion.”

  • Plateau Orgasm is a concept that suggests orgasm can occur during the plateau phase of the sexual response sequence, without rhythmic contractions or intense genital sensations. It is referred to as “emotional orgasm” and may be interpreted as a pre-orgasmic phenomenon. Tantric practitioners aim to sustain a plateau-level state of meditative-coital ecstasy for spiritual enlightenment. Plateau orgasm involves a random contraction pattern and may contribute to multiorgasmic experiences.
  • Tonic Orgasm is characterized by sustained muscle contractions of the levator ani and/or urogenital diaphragm, without rhythmic contractions. It occurs during the “tonic reflex” and is associated with the emission stage of male orgasm. In females, evidence suggests a possible connection to a vestigial prostate gland and sensations of suspension and tonic contractions.
  • Clonic Orgasm is characterized by rhythmic contractions of superficial muscles in the perineum. It occurs during a clonic reflex and can be nonterminative, potentially contributing to multiorgasmic experiences. In males, it involves contractions without emission, while in females, it manifests as vulval contractions.
  • Fusion Orgasm combines tonic and clonic muscle activity and occurs in both males and females. Fusion orgasm is a complete orgasmic response (both components or reflexes) and typically involves a refractory period.

ABSTRACT:

This project explored the nature of orgasm using both theory-construction and questionnaire-survey procedures. A comprehensive review of the literature differentiated 17 dimensions of orgasm/ and a synthesis of major research findings and theories produced two heuristic formulations: the “sexual response sequence” and an orgasm typology consisting of four physiologically distinct types of orgasm. A questionnaire survey was then conducted using the Orgasmic Experience Questionnaire, which was designed to collect data on most of the 17 dimensions of orgasm. Fifty-three adult participants (30 males and 23 females) completed the research process and contributed a total of 90 reported types of orgasm (RTO). A hierarchical cluster analysis and stepwise discriminant analysis of the questionnaire data revealed five distinct types of orgasm, four of which resemble the types in the theoretical formulation. It is not presently clear whether the fifth type represents a misperceived theoretical type or a new physiologically distinct type. This typology will serve as a heuristic model in a future psychophysiological laboratory study of orgasm.
