Study – “Female sexual orgasm in the Indian context”

In an effort to represent orgasmic experiences around the world, today I selected an article called “Female sexual orgasm in the Indian context,” which highlights sexual health barriers that over 600,000,000 clitoris-owners face in India.Drawing from the previous Reddit post on the complexity of orgasm (https://www.reddit.com/r/MultipleOs/comments/100sjbb/complexity_of_orgasm_from_an_ecological/), many factors can affect one’s orgasm, access to sexual education, and way of thinking about sex and sexuality. Like their Western counterparts, India people have a unique set of individual factors, community factors, societal and cultural factors, and government factors that can change a person’s sex life.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM ARTICLE

  • In India, fundamental women rights are not universally accessible or enjoyed. In India, orgasm is not featured in discussion, even in the discussion of intellects. The masses of India do not know of the positive effects of orgasms (one’s ability to perceive, identify and express emotions, gain self-confidence, and improve decision-making). The masses view sex for reproduction and an ejaculation opportunity for penis-owners.The negligence of Indian society towards female orgasm “stems not just from the history of prevalent patriarchy but also is evident as a concept less understood right from the Freudian era” (p. 9-10). (As a Westerner, I had thought wrongly that the Kamasutra would be practiced behind closed doors at large in India, but, sadly, I was wrong.)Freud’s view of pleasure of clitoral and vaginal pleasure (clitorally-induced orgasm = immature, vaginally induced orgasm = mature) promotes more attention to vaginas than clitorides. (Feeling however does correlate with the stimulated region. It’s controversial whether these are types of orgasms.)Ancient texts of India life thousands of years ago, such as the Kamasutra, emphasized prioritizing the pleasure of clitoris-owner over the partners, particularly a penis-owner’s pleasure. By contrast, other ancient works, such as sculptures of the caves of Khajuraho are depicted with the supremacy of penis-owners in mind.Numerous socio-cultural elements limit the expression of Indian clitoris-owners and penis-owners, such as Asceticism (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asceticism), which functions of morality principles and promotes prolonged abstinence. Negative psychological symptoms related to Ascetic practice is called Ascetic syndrome. These cultural practices are “so deeply rooted that sex and orgasm are not talked of often in Indian families and are still considered a societal taboo” (p. 12).Conducting sexological research in India is difficult due to the societal taboo. Furthermore, people of all genders who seek help go to traditional faith healing center’s instead of sex therapists or mental health professionals. This can reinforce negative outlook toward sexuality and exacerbate Ascetic syndrome (Also see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dhat_syndrome).

ABSTRACT

Sexual satisfaction is a natural need of every individual, validated by human biology. Positive sexual orgasms impact an individual’s ability to perceive, identify and express emotions, gain self-confidence, and improve decision-making. Unfortunately, a large proportion of the Indian masses hardly know of the implications of sexual gratification, and for others, sexual activity is either about reproduction or male ejaculation. In our culture, sex is less talked of, let alone the sexual needs of a woman on whom many societal restrictions have already been imposed. This article intends to revisit the evolution of female sexuality and female orgasm, focusing on its place in Indian society, the roots of Indian culture that places male supremacy on the forefront, and how they interplay with each other.
